Chalk board news in Monrovia

MONROVIA - LIBERIA , 2007 :In Monrovia, Liberia a unique form of journalism exists where the news is written out daily on a chalk board for everyone to read as they pass by on the busy main street. Alfred J. Sirleaf first established his chalk board news, " Daily Talk" on May 14th 2000 during the Charles Taylor regime. The innovative journalist saw a need for "straight to the point" reporting that was free and accessible to all. His provocative style of reporting the truth led him to seriously fear for this life and resulted in the Daily Talk being destroyed twice before he finally fled into "exile" in Ghana. As peace returned so did the Daily Talk and today it is one of the most read News Sources in the capital with thousands everyday taking the time to stop as they walk or drive by to get the breaking news. The Daily Talk is not merely a Chalk board standing on the side of the road - Alfred J. Sirleaf has constructed his booth for maximum efficiency. Behind the folding three panel chalk board is a small "News Room". In the News Room he can work on the next set of news while viewers read the current set by means of utilizing a rotating double sided chalk board. (Photos by : Christopher Herwig )

MONROVIA - LIBERIA , FEBRUARY 8 2007 : Vera Manly (077047743) Deputy Commandant fro Training. She has been in the Police force for 16 years, and sees men and her counterparts, and encourages new female recruits not to make yourself vulnerable. All recruits are treated the same in training. The president wants to encourage those women who are highschool dropouts to get an education through the new incentive program just for women run by the Ministery of Gender and UNMIL. Khalid (20) is the oldest of seven brothers living in Zaatari Refugee Camp, Jordan. Along with Hasan (17), Hassaan (16), Mohammed (14), Mansour (12), Ihsan (11) and Hussein (7), they live alone in a small caravan on the edge of the camp. Their mother left for Europe over a year ago, travelling via the sea in a small boat through Greece before finally reaching Germany. Her wish was that once she got there, through family reunification laws, her sons would be able to join her, but one year and two months later, the family’s case is still in limbo and Khalid explains how he doesn’t know if he will ever see his mother again. With a father not in the picture back in Syria, Khalid has assumed the responsibilities of looking after his brothers and his face looks tired and aged beyond his years.
